I found The Old English Cookery Book by Peggy Hutchinson particularly interesting.
Published in the 1950's it's a collection of recipes gleaned from towns and villages, mostly in the north of england. As well as the more familiar recipes there are some here I've never come across before such as Staindrop Pie, Shildon Bannocks, Threshing Day Puddings and Boer War Sandwich! A lot of these recipes obviously have strong connections to the places they originated and have been handed down through the generations.
There also seems to be an emphasis on thriftiness and preserving which would be important both to farming folk and rural communites in general.
A fascinating and unusual little book to have on your shelf.
The book itself is in good, clean condition. There is a dedication neatly written on the first endpaper. The DW has some wear; scuffing to edges etc...and a few small tears. Still, it's rather attractive and good to have.
